Sea Lyme Grass

Leymus mollis

A hardy perennial grass, Sea Lyme Grass is native to North America (including all the Atlantic Provinces). This grass can grow up to 2 meters (typically 1m) tall and has an abundance of broad, blue-green leaves. It usually grows in discrete clumps but also spreads belowground by rhizomes. The flowering stalks give rise to beige to yellow spikes up to 30 cm long. The seeds mature in late summer and are a good food resource for birds. Deer resistant.

Nature Habitats and Garden Preferences:

Usually found on sand, gravel or cobble ocean beaches but occurs occasionally inland on lakeshores and road sides. Somewhat salt and drought tolerant. Needs full sun and usually grows on well-drained substrates. Suitable for sandy or other well-drained soils on sunny sites. In natural settings, grows with other beach and shoreline plants such as Beach Pea, Beach Sandwort, Sea Rocket and Marram grass.
