Prairie Cordgrass

Sporobolus michauxianus

A hardy perennial grass, Prairie Cordgrass is native to North America (including all the Atlantic Provinces). This grass can grow up to 2.5 meters (typically 1.5 m) tall, with bright green leaves. This plant spreads belowground by rhizomes. The flowering stalks give rise to green and purple branching spikes up to 30 cm long that ripen to beige to yellow. The seeds mature in early fall and are a good food resource for birds. Makes a beautiful and long-lasting cut flower or addition to fall wreaths. Deer resistant.

Nature Habitats and Garden Preferences:

Usually found in brackish wetlands, ditches, ocean and lake shorelines. Somewhat salt and drought tolerant. Prefers full sun and wet soils but can grow in a wide range of soil conditions. Leaves and flowering stalks have sharp backward pointing hairs that can cause cuts; be careful when handling mature plants. In natural settings, grows with other wetland and shoreline plants, such as Bayberry, Virginia Rose, Blue Flag Iris and Wild Morning Glory.
